Why Invest in High-End Outdoor Lighting?

High-end outdoor lighting offers more than just curb appeal—it provides safety, security, and ambiance. Here’s why investing in top-tier lighting solutions is a smart choice:

  • Enhanced Safety: Prevents trips and falls by illuminating paths, stairs, and elevation changes.

  • Increased Security: Deters intruders by reducing dark areas around your home.

  • Curb Appeal: Highlights architectural and landscape features for a luxurious outdoor setting.

  • Energy Efficiency: LED lighting consumes less power and lasts significantly longer than traditional bulbs.

  • A Design Pops: You want a luminaire that is a high CRI (color rendering index) so that all of natures colors pop.

  • Long lasting: Well designed luminaires account for heat in an LED and Driver, which allows a designed space to look like it did the day it was installed.

What is a Rule of Thumb for High-End Outdoor Lighting?

Achieving a balanced and sophisticated outdoor lighting design involves following some key principles to ensure functionality and aesthetics are properly designed utilizing the right luminaire.  Here are the best practices for up lights, down lights, and path lights:

Up lighting: Accentuating Architecture and Trees

Up lighting is a technique where lights are positioned at ground level and pointed upward to highlight architectural details, trees, and landscape elements. This creates a dramatic and elegant effect that hides unwanted glare and doesn't cause light pollution.

Landscape Lighting Rule of Thumb:

  • High-end Outdoor Lighting luminaires have optics that can be switched out depending on the need, use a narrow beam TIR optic with an up light (10-25°) for tall, thin structures like columns, thin tree trunks or roof peaks.

  • Use wider beam TIR optics with an up lights (30-60°) for broad areas like facades or large tree canopies, the exterior wall of a house.

  • Position lights at the object's base and angle them slightly outward to minimize glare and create depth; do this 6" to 18' away from the base.

  • High-end Outdoor Lighting Luminaires are often adjustable lumen, to prevent light pollution, estimate the height you need and reference the Maximum Candela distance for each luminaire (can be found on the photometric report) and set the appropriate lumen output.

Downlighting: Creating Natural Moonlighting Effects

Downlighting, or moonlighting, involves lighting high up in trees or structures to cast soft, natural illumination downward. This method mimics the glow of moonlight filtering through foliage, creating an inviting and subtle ambiance.

Things to Consider:

  • Mount down lights at least 20' high but preferably 30' to 50' for a realistic moonlight effect.

  • Use shielded fixtures with long shrouds, a TIR optics and an external glare guard to avoid harsh glare and focus the light downward with an even spread.

  • Angle the lights to wash over paths gently, seating areas, and gardens without overpowering the space.

  • Moonlight is around 4100K, but any color temperature with a very high CRI will give amazing results from 2700K to 5000K.

  • Dont forget to use up lighting with down lighting for a combined effect of making the trunk and canopy visible standing in a pool of light under the tree.

Path Lighting: Safety and Guidance

Path lighting ensures safe navigation while adding visual interest to your outdoor space. When installed correctly, these lights provide a welcoming glow without appearing too harsh or cluttered while not creating glare.

Things to Consider:

  • Space path lights 10-15 feet apart to avoid over-illumination.

  • Stagger lights on both sides of the path rather than placing them in a straight line to prevent a “runway” effect.

  • Low-level lighting (100-200 lumens) should softly illuminate walkways without creating glare.

  • High-end Outdoor Lighting designs will incorporate down lighting for paths when possible.

  • High-end Luminaire will be extremely durable made of virgin brass or high grade stainless steel, with a high CRI (98 CRI) avoid recycled materials, powder coats, and any light below 92 CRI.
